Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

When I work with you through Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), my aim is to help you understand how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are interconnected, and to guide you gently toward more balanced, empowering ways of thinking and living. CBT is compassionate, direct, and evidence-based, and at Bridge to Balance, I tailor it to you as a unique individual.

What Is CBT?

CBT is a structured, goal-focused form of therapy grounded in the idea that the way we interpret events, not just the events themselves, plays a major role in how we feel and act.

I believe that by bringing awareness to automatic thoughts and patterns, questioning them, and reframing them with more balanced perspectives, you can experience real, lasting change.

In our sessions, I help you identify unhelpful thinking styles (like catastrophizing, all-or-nothing thinking, or self-critical beliefs), notice how these patterns fuel emotional distress, and replace them with more realistic, compassionate alternatives.

Over time, you’ll gain skills to respond to life’s challenges with greater clarity and resilience. I practice CBT with warmth, curiosity, and respect.

While CBT has a structured methodology, I always adapt it to your pace, style, and personal history. For some clients, I may integrate mindfulness, self-compassion, or trauma-informed strategies to deepen the work.

How We’ll Work Together

In my approach, I see therapy as a collaborative journey. Here’s how I typically guide the CBT process:

Assessment & Goal Setting

In our early sessions, I’ll ask about your history, what’s been weighing on you, and what you hope to achieve. Together, we’ll set clear, actionable goals that feel meaningful to you.

Identifying Thought Patterns

We'll explore common, recurring thoughts you have in difficult situations. I help you notice any distortions or filters in your thinking that may be contributing to distress.

Exploring Emotions & Behaviours

We’ll look at how those thoughts lead to emotional reactions (e.g. anxiety, sadness, shame) and how those feelings may push you toward behaviours that aren’t helpful in the long run.

Challenging & Reframing Thoughts

Step by step, I’ll help you test the validity of your automatic thoughts and gradually replace them with more balanced, supportive alternatives.

Behavioural Experiments & Homework

You’ll sometimes try small experiments between sessions, seeing what happens when you test new beliefs or behaviours in real life. These are not “homework you must do,” but opportunities to practice and learn.

Review & Adaptation

As we go, we’ll check what strategies are working or not, adjust our approach, and celebrate your progress.

Through consistent practice and reflection, you’ll internalize new ways of thinking, feeling, and acting long after therapy ends.

What CBT Can Help With

I use CBT to support people navigating a wide variety of challenges. Some areas where CBT has been especially effective include:

  • Anxiety & panic
  • Depression & low mood
  • Generalized worry or rumination
  • Obsessive thoughts & compulsions
  • Phobias or specific fears
  • Stress, overwhelm & burnout
  • Low self-esteem, imposter feelings, and perfectionism
  • Relationship conflict & communication struggles
  • Trauma-related symptoms & intrusive thoughts
  • Health anxiety, sleep disruption, or emotional regulation

Whether your struggles feel focused or pervasive, I’ll work with you to tailor CBT to address what feels most pressing, while also helping you build skills that apply broadly.

What You Can Expect in Sessions

  • Session length & frequency: Most sessions last about 50 minutes and are typically scheduled weekly (or at a rhythm that fits your needs).
  • Initial meetings: We’ll spend time together exploring what brings you in, your background, and the goals you’d like to pursue.
  • Middle-phase work: Here’s where much of the CBT process unfolds, bringing awareness to thoughts, testing beliefs, and practicing change strategies.
  • Between sessions: I may invite you to try short exercises, journaling, or behavioural tasks, but always with flexibility and compassion.
  • Review & closure: Toward the later phase, we’ll look back on your growth, reinforce what’s sustainable, and plan how you can maintain momentum.

My aim is always to give you tools you can use independently, so you don’t rely on therapy forever, but rather integrate new skills into your daily life.
