Deciding to look for an addiction therapist is one of the bravest steps you can take. It often comes after months or perhaps years of silent struggle. You may have experienced moments where you felt isolated, overwhelmed, or unsure if change was even possible. If you are searching for an addiction therapist in Ottawa, you are likely looking for more than just a clinical appointment. You are looking for a safe space to land.
At Bridge To Balance, I understand that the journey from struggle to stability is not a straight line. It is a bridge we build together, plank by plank. If you are considering addiction therapy for substance use or addictive behaviours but feel anxious about what that process entails, you are not alone. Fear of judgment, uncertainty about the process, or the worry that you might be forced into a “one-size-fits-all” box are common concerns.
This guide is designed to walk you through exactly what to expect when you begin addiction therapy with me, demystifying the process so you can move forward with confidence and clarity.

A Free Consultation to Start
Picking up the phone or sending an email can feel daunting. That is why the process at Bridge To Balance begins with a free 15-minute connection call before you ever book a full session.
This is not a high-pressure sales pitch or a medical interview. It is a chance for us to connect as humans. We will talk briefly about your goals and see if we are the right fit for one another. If we decide to move forward, we will schedule your first full session.
During this call, I might ask:
- What prompted you to reach out today?
- What does “balance” look like to you?
- Do you have any specific fears or hesitations about therapy?
This is also your chance to ask me questions. You might wonder about my experience with specific addiction substances or how my approach works. This initial step is about ensuring you feel comfortable before we begin.
Getting Set Up: Paperwork & Preparation
Once your appointment is booked, the administrative side of things is streamlined to be as easy as possible. You will receive an email from Jane, the secure platform I use for practice management.
In that email, you will find your intake paperwork. It is important to fill this out at least 24 hours before your session. This allows me to review your history and prepare, ensuring we can make the most of our time together.
The First Session: Building a Foundation
The very first session is about building a foundation for our work together. Because there is often a lot to cover, I offer two options for this first appointment:
- 75 minutes (recommended): This gives us extra time to dive deeper into your goals and start the process without feeling rushed.
- 50 minutes: This is a standard session length. If you would prefer something shorter.
This is your journey, so you get to choose what feels best for you.
During this initial meeting, we will:
- Review consent and confidentiality agreements, so you know exactly how your privacy is protected.
- Go over your personal history to understand the context of your life.
- Explore what brought you to addiction therapy right now.
- Talk about what you hope to gain from our time together.
During the first few sessions, we will start creating a treatment plan and setting goals together. Therapy works best when it is collaborative. This is where we begin shaping the path forward.
Different Session Formats: In-Person & Virtual
Accessibility and comfort are key values at Bridge To Balance. I offer different ways to meet depending on what fits your life.
- In-Person Sessions: If you prefer a dedicated physical space to step away from your daily routine, I offer in-person appointments at my office located at 190 O’Connor Street in Ottawa. When you arrive, you will check in with the receptionist. I will then meet you in the waiting area before we head into the office together. This space is designed to be a calm, confidential environment where you can focus entirely on your recovery.
- Virtual Sessions: If your schedule is busy or you feel more comfortable in your own environment, I also offer virtual therapy sessions. Since you will already have a Jane account for your paperwork, the process is simple. You will log in at your appointment time and be admitted into the secure virtual room. This allows you to access high-quality care from the comfort of your home.
How Couples & Family Sessions Work
Addiction often affects the entire family unit, and healing relationships is a powerful part of recovery. If you are attending couples or family therapy, these sessions follow a specific “diamond shape” structure to ensure everyone is heard and supported.
- First Session: Everyone comes together to talk about goals and share background information.
- Second Session: I meet with each person individually to understand their unique perspective.
- Third Session: We come back together as a group to begin working toward your shared goals.
It is important to know that in couples and family therapy, I do not keep secrets between sessions. If something important comes up individually, I will bring it into the group work in a supportive and constructive way. This ensures transparency and trust remain at the center of our work.

Moving Past the Stigma
Regardless of the format we choose, one of the first things we tackle is the heavy weight of stigma. Society often paints addiction as a failure of will, but I know it is far more complex. Addiction is frequently a coping mechanism, a way to manage pain, trauma, or overwhelming emotions when other tools aren’t available.
When you work with an addiction therapist, you will notice a shift in language. I don’t view you as a “problem” to be fixed. I view you as a human being who is hurting and looking for balance. Whether you are dealing with alcohol, substance use, or behavioural patterns that feel out of control, my approach is rooted in compassion, not shame.
You do not need to hit “rock bottom” to deserve support. Whether you are just beginning to question your relationship with substances or you are in the midst of a crisis, you are worthy of care right now.
The Approach: Harm Reduction vs. Abstinence
A common misconception about seeing an addiction therapist in Ottawa is that you must commit to complete abstinence immediately. While sobriety is the goal for many, I recognize that recovery is a highly individualized process.
At Bridge To Balance, I meet you where you are. For some, this means a “harm reduction” approach. This focuses on reducing the negative consequences of substance use while you work toward safety and stability. For others, the goal is total abstinence.
I will work with you to develop strategies that align with your specific goals and needs. I am not here to dictate your life. I am here to provide the map and the flashlight while you drive the car.
The Role of Trauma-Informed Care
It is rare for addiction to exist in a vacuum. Often, it is deeply intertwined with past experiences, unresolved trauma, or chronic stress. This is why finding a trauma-informed addiction therapist is critical.
Being trauma-informed means I recognize that your behaviours may be responses to past pain. Instead of asking “What is wrong with you?” I effectively ask, “What happened to you?” This shift changes everything. It means we move at your pace, ensuring that addiction therapy never feels overwhelming or re-traumatizing.
I utilize modalities that respect the connection between your mind and body. For instance, you might find that talk therapy alone hasn’t been enough because trauma lives in the nervous system. I am trained to help you regulate those physical responses, creating a sense of safety that allows true healing to begin.
The Bridge to Balance Promise
You are not defined by what you have been through or how you have coped. Your potential for growth, resilience, and transformation determines you. When you choose Bridge To Balance, you are choosing a partner in your addiction recovery.
I offer a blend of professional expertise and genuine human empathy. I am steady, grounded, and hopeful, even when you might struggle to hold that hope for yourself. Recovery is about more than just stopping a behaviour. It is about reclaiming your relationship with yourself. It is about moving from a place of chaos and pain to a place of balance and peace.
