Somatic Experiencing Therapy

We all experience overwhelming moments that can leave lasting imprints on our minds and bodies. When stress or trauma lingers, it can show up as anxiety, depression, physical tension, or a general sense of disconnection.

I understand how difficult it can be to navigate these feelings on your own, which is why I offer Somatic Experiencing therapy at Bridge to Balance—a gentle, body-oriented approach designed to help you restore balance and resilience.

What Is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a therapeutic modality developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It is designed to support the body's natural ability to heal from trauma and stress.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, Somatic Experiencing (SE) focuses on the nervous system and physical sensations in the body. By tuning into these sensations and understanding how your body responds to stress, I help you move through and release stored tension that may be holding you back.

At Bridge to Balance, I believe that trauma doesn't just live in our minds—it lives in our bodies. You may feel stuck in patterns of fear, hypervigilance, or emotional numbness, even if the initial event that caused these reactions happened years ago.

Somatic Experiencing provides a compassionate way to work through these patterns without re-traumatization, inviting your system to find safety and calm at its own pace.

My Approach to Somatic Experiencing

When you step into Bridge to Balance, you'll be stepping into a safe, non-judgmental space where you can reconnect with yourself. Healing is a collaborative process, and I guide you as you explore what your body is telling you.

We'll take it step by step, always at your pace, so that you feel empowered and in control of your healing journey. I begin each session by checking in about how you feel physically and emotionally.

From there, we may focus on specific memories, feelings, or sensations that arise. I guide you in noticing subtle physical changes—such as muscle tension, temperature shifts, or the rhythm of your breath.

These small cues are windows into the body's stress responses, and by paying attention to them, we can identify where you may be holding onto unresolved tension.

I use grounding techniques, breathwork, and gentle movement exercises to help you stay present and regulate your nervous system. If any sensations feel overwhelming, we'll slow down and shift focus to what feels supportive and safe.

My goal at Bridge to Balance is for you to leave each session feeling more connected to your body, more grounded, and better equipped to handle stress.

Who Can Benefit from Somatic Experiencing?

You don't need to have experienced significant trauma to benefit from SE. Stress, loss, chronic anxiety, and other life challenges can all create imbalances in the nervous system that may lead to emotional and physical discomfort.

Somatic Experiencing is effective for:

  • Trauma survivors: If you've experienced an accident, assault, abuse, or any life-threatening event, SE can help you reclaim your sense of safety.
  • Anxiety and panic disorders: SE can support you in calming the physiological responses that fuel anxiety and panic.
  • Chronic stress and burnout: If your nervous system is constantly in overdrive, SE can help you shift into a more restful, balanced state.
  • Grief and loss: The body holds onto grief, sometimes manifesting as tightness, fatigue, or aches. SE helps release that energy gently.
  • Chronic pain and physical tension: Some forms of pain are rooted in the body's attempts to protect itself. By addressing the underlying nervous system responses, you may find relief.

What to Expect During Somatic Experiencing Sessions

Each Somatic Experiencing session at Bridge to Balance is tailored to your unique needs. There is no "one-size-fits-all" approach, and I adjust our pace and focus based on your comfort level.

In the first session, I'll take the time to get to know you and understand your goals for therapy. We'll discuss what brought you to seek support, your daily experience, and any concerns you may have about the process.

I'll also explain what you can expect during sessions and answer any questions to help you feel comfortable. During our ongoing sessions, we'll work together to create a sense of safety within your body.

I may invite you to recall a memory or notice a current sensation and describe what you're feeling—but there is no pressure to relive any painful events in detail. Instead, we focus on how your body is experiencing the moment.

We'll track sensations like tingling, heat, or a release of tension, noticing when your body moves toward relaxation or ease. We'll also celebrate the small wins along the way.

Each moment you feel slightly more relaxed or grounded is a sign that your nervous system is learning to regulate more effectively. These gradual changes build up over time, helping you feel stronger, calmer, and more present in your everyday life.

The Benefits of Somatic Experiencing

One of the most rewarding parts of my work at Bridge to Balance is seeing clients experience newfound freedom. The benefits of SE extend beyond symptom relief—they foster a deeper connection to yourself and your life.

Here are some of the key benefits you can expect:

  • Increased resilience: You'll develop the capacity to handle stressful situations without feeling overwhelmed.
  • Improved emotional regulation: You'll learn to identify and shift emotional states more easily.
  • Greater body awareness: You'll become more attuned to your body's needs, signals, and boundaries.
  • Reduced physical symptoms: Tension, fatigue, and other stress-related symptoms may decrease as your nervous system finds balance.
  • Enhanced sense of safety and connection: You may notice a deeper sense of ease in your relationships and daily routines.
